Living gluten free for the last 10 years has certainly had its challenges along the way, I have learnt to adapt to my way of life including cooking at home and eating out. I have always had an entrepreneurial spark in me, probably from the way my family are and how I have been bought up. I always wanted to have something that was mine in life, an achievement, something that helped the community and make a positive influence. This started by deciding to dive into the world of technology and create an app for people to eat out, I have always found eating out a really big challenge. Restaurants are really good these days, however it has taken a long time to get there and there is still a long way to go. The Biteappy app was launched back in October 2014 and has been growing from strength to strength over the years, now it relies on the food allergy community and restaurant industry to add restaurants and share reviews and photos which each other. The app has helped guide people in the right direction but I still feel that people with food allergies and intolerances are just not that confident.

Eating out has its challenges, when I was diagnosed with coeliacs I was in my twenties, my prime you could say, I had to change the way I ate and what I ate drastically to be able to protect my body. I found this really hard, going out with friends, not feeling confident to tell them I had an auto-immune disease so would just never eat when I went out. Now, I appreciate their reaction of feeling uncomfortable and not wanting to eat around someone who was so uninterested in food…’does she have an eating disorder? Is there something wrong with her?’ all questions I thought would be talked about. As I have grown with my journey of being gluten free I have learnt that it is something not to be embarrassed or ashamed about, in fact why not educate people and make everyone feel more confident. Live life to the full, no matter what, that is surely the way forward. Ordering food is still a challenge, don’t get me wrong, there is some amazing chains and independents out their, flying their food allergy flags with their allergen menus but there is still a huge lack nationwide and it does make it tricky to eat out. I always try my hardest to make sure I am protecting myself and my health, are they using clean surfaces and pans to cook my food. Figuring out alternatives, sometimes you get an allergen menu and everything has gluten in it, this is sometimes because it has bread with it, which can easily be taken off the dish. I have learnt to ask questions, grill the staff, talk to the manager, most places should be able to accommodate.

So as I have grown with Biteappy, and building my bank of over 250 gluten free and dairy free recipes on the Biteappy Blog, yes I inherited a lactose intolerance, although it seems to be having a break at the moment, I still don’t really cook with dairy, I actually prefer the taste. Following on from the success of both of these projects, I have decided that one thing people are lacking is advice, someone to share their thoughts, likes and hates with, that is where my new Biteappy Club comes into play. A 20+ page PDF document which gives you an in-depth insight into my life and my journey, tips on what products to buy and use and of course a bank of recipes including some exclusive ones to make sensible meal plans, it is all about the prep! The most exciting bit is that I have created a private Facebook group, where I am active and open to answering questions and giving advice as best I can, but remember I am not a doctor!

There are so many gluten free, healthy alternatives, skip the free from aisles from time to time and bake some yummy delicious snacks yourself. Use dried fruits to add in some natural sugar, use coconut oil as an alternative to normal oil, it tastes great in cooking, don’t underestimate it. Make use of almond and coconut flours when baking, and use nuts to make nice bases for things like cheesecake. There are so many options, fresh fruit and veggies are also a great grab and snack too!

I can’t wait to have all of you involved in this next chapter of the Biteappy Club, addition to this we have the E-Book which you can buy from Amazon, get involved and cook along with me at home! It is a lot of fun, i promise!
